Understanding and Preventing Common HVAC Failures

One of the most common issues with the HVAC is dirt or clogs in filters.

HVAC systems keep houses at a comfortable temperature all year round. However, clogs, refrigerant leaks, thermostat malfunctions, electrical issues, and faulty ductwork can cause problems.

Let's look at some causes of these HVAC issues and how to prevent them.

Dirty or clogged filters

One of the most common issues with the HVAC is dirt or clogs in filters. Dirty and clogged filters can't filter the air properly, putting greater strain on the system and making it work less efficiently. Change filters every two to three months or when the manufacturer recommends.

Thermostat malfunctions

The problem might be incorrect settings. If thermostat settings are incorrect, it could cycle the system in error and subject it to more wear and tear. Check the thermostat and calibrate it if required. If it's older, upgrading to a programmable model might be a good idea.

Refrigerant leaks

If the refrigerant leaks out, the HVAC can start to blow warm air and won't be able to cool properly. Check for leaks periodically, especially if the system is not cooling.

Electrical issues

The HVAC might shut down if there are faulty wires or tripped breakers. The connections should be tight for the system to get enough power. Check the circuit breaker; ensure the wiring is correct if it doesn't work.

Drainage problems

It isn't just filters that can get clogged, but drain lines, too. These clogs can lead to water leaks and humidity problems. Clean the condensate drain to prevent debris from building up inside them and blocking the flow.

Mechanical wear and tear

The HVAC has mechanical parts that can wear out, like belts and bearings, especially in older systems or if the HVAC gets plenty of use. Check and replace these components if they seem loose or worn out.

Ignition or pilot control problems

It can be difficult to heat the house if the ignition or pilot is faulty. Check for faults and clean the ignition components if they are not performing well enough. A pilot light that doesn't function properly can indicate a more serious problem.

Preventative maintenance

The best way to avoid issues is to try and prevent them. Homeowners can check some components and installations, but most HVAC maintenance is professional. Experts can identify and fix problems before they escalate. These check-ups are especially useful just before peak usage times.

Keep your HVAC in good shape

Many problems can arise if an HVAC system isn't maintained properly. Fortunately, most of these problems are preventable. Homeowners can handle some basic maintenance issues but should leave the complex tasks to a professional.
